Women continue to make it happen

International Women's Day was celebrated on 8 March and the theme for this year was “Make it Happen”.

Ordinary women have been playing a major role in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men.

In ancient Greece, Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to end war and during the French Revolution, Parisian women calling for "liberty, equality, fraternity" marched on Versailles to demand women's suffrage.

In our own country's history, women have played a pivotal role in the fight for equality. National Women's Day is celebrated each year on 9 August to commemorate the national march of women in 1956 to petition against the pass laws of the Apartheid era.

The women in the retail motor industry certainly make it happen, and there are countless unsung heroines that make a difference in the lives of those they touch.

The MISA Women's Forum was established to support women in our industry and the MISA Woman of the Year Award pays homage to the women who make a difference at work and the communities we serve.

Don't forget to nominate your candidate for the 2015 MISA Woman of the Year now.
