Other causes of shoulder pain

  • Acromial clavicular joint pain (pain in the AC joint, where the collar bone attaches to the shoulder bone, is often felt as pain when you roll over in bed)
  • Pain referred from the cervical spine (the neck)
  • Pain referred from organs, such as the diaphragm or gallbladder.
Contributing factors to shoulder pain

  • Overhead activities – for example people working with their arms and hands above shoulder height, such as technicians, painters, and machinists
  • Participation in overhead sports, such as baseball pitchers, cricket bowlers, and swimmers
  • Impact injuries sustained in sports such as rugby or resulting from car accidents.

Nutrition and medical factors contributing to shoulder injuries

  • Tobacco smoking causes the weakening of tendons
  • Steroid use contributes to the weakening of the musculotendinous junction of the muscles
  • Diabetes predisposes patients to developing spontaneous frozen shoulders
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can cause spontaneous frozen shoulder/s.
