How is shoulder pain diagnosed and treated?

There are a number of ways the causes of shoulder pain can be diagnosed.

Sonar

A sonar is taken of the soft tissue surrounding the shoulder joint. This is the most accurate test for identifying a tear/s in the rotator cuff muscles. 

X-rays

X-rays are used to determine joint space narrowing, dislocations or fractures.

Blood tests

Blood tests are used to rule out any inflammatory cause such as, rheumatoid arthritis vs. osteoarthritis.

Physical examinations

A physical examination by a trained physiotherapist in musculoskeletal conditions.

An examination by an orthopaedic surgeon.

Treatment of painful shoulder

Medical treatment

With medication such as ibuprofen, celecoxib, indomethacin, naproxen sodium, and paracetamol.

Complementary treatment

Such as omega 3 capsules, anti-oxidants, and products containing glucosamine and chondroitin.

Physiotherapy

Hands-on treatment and rehabilitation programmes by a physiotherapist.
