The aim is to reduce the risk of osteoporotic fractures as these lead to great medical expense and decreased quality of life.
Risk factors you can manage:
- Maintain a healthy body weight (people who are too thin are at greater risk)
- Reduce alcohol intake
- Stop smoking
- Maintain adequate levels of vitamin D and calcium intake in your diet
- Exercise! If you are immobile or lead an inactive lifestyle you are at higher risk, as weight-bearing exercise keeps bones healthy and strong
- Create a safe environment to reduce your risk of falls
